WoW’s character naming rules

  • Names must be between 2 and 12 characters long.
  • Letters only — no numbers, spaces, or punctuation. Accented characters (like Ä or é) are allowed, which is how players dodge taken names.
  • Only the first letter is capitalized; the rest are forced to lowercase.
  • Names must be unique per realm. If your dream name is taken, an accented variant or a slight respelling usually works.

Tips for picking a name you won’t regret

  • Say it out loud. Your raid leader will be calling it over voice chat for years.
  • Lore-friendly names age better than patch-meme names. “Thalorien” survives expansions; jokes about the current season usually don’t.
  • Shorter names are easier to whisper, tag, and macro.
  • Already named and regretting it? Blizzard sells paid name changes — see our WoW character services guide for current pricing on name, race and faction changes.

How the generator works

Each race uses its own syllable bank modelled on Blizzard’s naming conventions — Orcish names hit hard consonants, Blood Elf names flow long and melodic, Tauren names combine nature words the way the lore does (Thunderhoof, Stonewalker). Meme mode ignores all of that and channels the proud tradition of the barbershop comedy name. Every result is validated against the real naming rules, so anything you copy will be accepted at character creation.
