THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 26, 2026
Short answer: nobody knows yet, and the loudest claims on both sides rest on talents no beta character ever used. SixtySim's October 19 update puts a Lone Wolf Survival build at 1,280 DPS, 19% ahead of the next spec, in a one-minute simulated fight against a level 63 boss. The beta capped at level 30, and the two talents doing most of that work, Sniper Shot and Lacerating Strikes, need 31 points, which means level 40. The biggest hunter thread on the forums isn't about damage at all. It says the ranged rotation is "80% AFK". The one set of real level 30 numbers, from the Forever Open, has hunters as the most-played class with a below-average win rate. Blizzard hasn't posted in any of the threads, and its only statement on the class, the September 30 deep dive, kept the dead zone on purpose.
The three threads
| Thread | Opened | Size | The claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunters afk for 80% of their rotation | October 23 | 283 posts, 3,900 views | The ranged rotation is Aimed Shot and one instant on cooldown, then waiting |
| Hunters need a nerf | October 24 | 147 posts | Scaling pets, in-combat traps and no world buffs make hunters "a zero risk, all reward class" |
| Remove the Hunter Dead Zone | October 21 | 79 posts | The 8 yard minimum range should go, as it did in patch 2.3 |
| FULL HUNTER FEEDBACK (EU) | October 24 | 15 posts | Removing shot clipping took away what made the class feel skilful |
They contradict each other. One crowd says the class is too strong, another says it's too dull to play, a third wants its defining weakness deleted, and the same sim feeds all three.
"80% AFK": what the rotation actually is at 30
The opening post, from Promises: "Bm hunters are 80% afk, using aimed shot and hawk on cooldown. mm hunters are 70% afk, using sniper shot, aimed shot, and arcane shot on cooldown." A level 30 beta hunter had Aimed Shot, now baseline at 20, a 2 second cast on a 6 second cooldown shared with Multi-Shot; Arcane Shot on its own 6 second cooldown; Serpent Sting; and Auto Shot. Beast Mastery's 16-point Summon Hawk, reachable at 25, shares its cooldown with Arcane Shot, so it replaces a button rather than adding one. That is one cast and one instant every 6 seconds. Sniper Shot, listed for Marksmanship, says level 40 on its tooltip. Nobody cast it in the beta.
The top reply, from OgreJr, is the real argument: "The complex part of hunter used to have to do with not clipping shots. That was removed for some reason." In Classic, Auto Shot and your casts fought over the same timer, and the skill was weaving Aimed Shot between autos without delaying them. Forever removed that deliberately. The October 15 build made Auto Shot require half a second standing still, "matching early versions of World of Warcraft," and the developers' note adds: "Your character will still fire Auto Shot while casting spells like Aimed Shot or Sniper Shot." Argonil's EU post calls weaving "the most quintessential aspect of playing a Classic hunter" and says "I cannot believe that it is now gone."
The counter is that this is Classic. "So does every class, this is classic. It's what people wanted right?" (pokerspiv, 9 likes.) The one hunter build that is busy is the melee weave Survival spec, which steps in and out of 8 yards between Auto Shots. It is also the build that sims highest.
The sim everyone is quoting
"The sims that are out there" means SixtySim, a public front end for the open-source WoWSims Forever. Its October 19 update runs beta client 1.60.1.70450 with hotfixes to October 18. One boss, one minute, pre-raid gear:
| Spec | DPS | Share of top |
|---|---|---|
| Survival Hunter (Night Elf) | 1,280.5 | 100% |
| Fury Warrior (Orc) | 1,073.7 | 83% |
| Shockadin (Human) | 1,006.8 | 78% |
| Marksmanship Hunter (Windshaper) | 995.8 | 77% |
| Beast Mastery Hunter (Night Elf) | 991.4 | 77% |
| Demonology Warlock (Orc) | 951.7 | 74% |
| Fire Mage (Orc) | 941.8 | 73% |
The "200 dps ahead" line in the nerf thread is this table: 1,280 minus 1,074. What it leaves out is where the number came from. Survival went from 939.1 DPS in fourth to 1,280.5 in first in one update, and SixtySim's own notes credit a new build, not a Blizzard change: "Survival with Lone Wolf and a two-hander, stepping into melee between Auto Shots." The same update made pets swing for level 60 creature damage, lifting Beast Mastery 9.6% and Marksmanship 5.2%, and notes that a Marksmanship build with a cat "beats Lone Wolf on one boss." The update page says plainly that a ranking move "is not by itself a Blizzard buff or nerf." The fight is one minute against a single level 63 dragonkin, in pre-raid gear, with talent values still being checked against the client.
The build leans on the 21-point Strider Kick, the 31-point Lacerating Strikes, which makes Mongoose Bite bleed for 40% of its damage over 21 seconds, and Lone Wolf for a flat 20%. Only Lone Wolf was available at the beta cap. In a thread on the Survival capstone opened October 26, the replies came from players planning to skip Lacerating Strikes for Intimidation or Scatter Shot. The top spec in the sim is built around a talent half its own players intend not to take.
The nerf thread, and the number from the Forever Open
BigDeepers' opening post argues that hunters were held back in Classic raids because they "didn't scale really with world buffs." Take world buffs away, add "traps in battle, multiple traps allowed at once, pets scaling with your stats, pets getting MS and curse of tongue equivalents, lone wolf + sniper shot," and you get "zero risk, all reward." And: "Anyone who played on the beta knows that if you saw a hunter you were dead."
The mechanics are real. The deep dive confirmed traps in combat on a 30 second cooldown, pets that scale with the hunter's gear and no longer take player buffs, a Crocolisk bite that halves healing and a Bat that slows casting. The October 15 build allowed one fire and one frost trap at once and made fire traps scale with attack power. The world buff premise is his: several BlizzCon write-ups reported world buffs working in the open world but not in raids, and Blizzard hasn't posted a rule we can find.
The thread didn't buy the conclusion. Top reply, Homesteader, 25 likes: "Can we call a truce on the 'nerf [insert class]' nonsense until we at least see how they perform at 60. Hunters were already strong at early to mid levels relative to other classes." And: "The current 'sims' are grossly incorrect, they always are. Even on the sites that host them they have a disclaimer about this."
On the PvP claim there is one real data set: the Forever Open, the $100,000 duel tournament played on the beta on October 17 and 18. Hunters were the most-played class, 241 of 1,380 checked-in players. Their win rate against other classes in the Swiss stage was 47.1%, fifth of nine, behind Paladins at 63.1%, Warlocks at 60.1%, Priests and Mages. Two hunters went 6 and 0, against 15 Paladins and 14 Warlocks. Duels aren't battlegrounds, but "if you saw a hunter you were dead" is not what 1,380 players found when they fought for money. The level 30 PvP complaints that did have numbers behind them are in our crowd control piece.
The dead zone
Auto Shot's tooltip still reads 8 to 35 yards, melee reaches 5, and between the two you can do neither. ZoDragon's opening post quotes Kalgan's 2007 patch 2.3 note ("We're planning to shrink the min range on ranged attacks to reduce or eliminate the 'dead zone'") and calls the gap "bad game design or a limitation of the engine at the time." The most liked reply, Vyar01: "Removing the dead zone is definitely one of those examples of 'hey we changed this because it sucked.' And now two decades later we have people insisting it was perfect game design that must be regarded as sacred." The other side was shorter. "No. Deal with it." (Stoi, 11 likes.) "Little compounding changes like this is how we got retail." (Drax.)
Here Blizzard has spoken. The deep dive lists the dead zone as a feature: "Hunters have strong ranged abilities and the longest range of any class. But Hunters' ranged abilities become unavailable in the 'dead zone' within 8 yards of their enemy." The same paragraph says hunters "cannot Stun or Interrupt" and still place traps only at their own feet, and it describes the Survival redesign as talents that "allow them to dance back and forth between ranged and melee combat." Remove the dead zone and there is no dance. We covered the same argument at level 20 in the class feedback roundup, and Blizzard's position hasn't moved.
What Blizzard has said, and when anything could change
Nothing in any of the four threads. The record is the September 30 deep dive, the October 15 Auto Shot and trap changes, and a September 23 note that the half-second Auto Shot wind-up had been bugged short for the beta's first week. Kaivax's October 23 farewell post says the team is spending this week on "priority issues and the game service itself," and name reservation opens tomorrow. Blizzard told TechRadar it plans weekly balance changes for the first six months after launch, which is the realistic window. Raids open December 9, and a Fury Warrior and a Survival Hunter standing next to each other on Lucifron is the first time anyone will have a number that isn't a simulation.
Our own tier list has Hunter at B, graded on what the talent changes gave and took rather than on sim output, because the class lost Killer Instinct and both Slaying talents and gained a Survival tree it never had. If you're rolling a hunter at name reservation, nothing here should change that. Even the nerf thread's opening post calls it the best leveller in the game, and nobody argued. The best race page and talent calculator will get you to 30 without a sim. Whether the melee weave is the best spec at 60 or a spreadsheet artefact is a December question.
