WoW Forever Fog: Why /console volumefog 0 Stopped Working, and What Still Helps

Blizzard removed the fog off switch in the September 24 WoW Forever beta build, then added heavier weather. Why the volumefog command no longer works, the eye strain complaints, the settings testers say reduce the fog, and what Blizzard has said.

THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED SEPTEMBER 29, 2026

Short answer: /console volumefog 0 no longer removes fog in the WoW Forever beta because Blizzard took the option away on purpose. The September 24 development notes list it as a bug fix: "Removed a setting that could disable fog in an unintended manner." Since then Blizzard has also started rolling out heavier weather, and a growing number of testers say the fog gives them eye strain and headaches. There is no in-game setting to turn it off, and Blizzard hasn't replied to any of the threads asking for one. A few settings reduce it, listed below.

What changed and when

In the beta's first week, the fog in Forever's zones was thicker than anything Classic players were used to. Players found that /console volumefog 0 turned volumetric fog off entirely, and fan sites published how-tos by September 19.

On September 23, Kaivax posted a short teaser in the beta forum: "Coming soon to the Beta," with a video titled "Increased weather effects are coming to WoW: Forever Beta Zones." Shacknews described it as heavy rain and fog effects in certain zones, with Elwynn Forest shown as the example. That thread now has 202 replies. One of the early ones reads: "there better be a way to turn the weather off, i can't see crap when it starts to rain with all this fog."

The next day, the September 24 build shipped. Under bug fixes, the notes say:

"Removed a setting that could disable fog in an unintended manner."

The note doesn't name the command. It is very likely volumefog, though. The first "volumefog 0 doesn't work anymore" thread went up about 35 minutes after the notes. Players have kept confirming it since, with screenshots on September 26 and reports on both the US and EU forums through September 29. Some say the command now works for a split second and then snaps back. Others say it thins the fog a little without removing it.

By the weekend, EU testers were also describing "the new heavy rain effects," so at least part of the weather update seems to be live. Blizzard hasn't published a note confirming that.

The complaints

Two new threads took off on September 28 and 29. One is titled "Fog command is gone, please for the love of God HELP." Its opening post says: "I'm getting eyestrain and head aches from less than an hour of play." The other, "The fog effect is hurting my eyes," had 39 replies within a day. Its author asks Blizzard to "allow us to adjust the graphics to our needs."

Across these threads, testers describe:

  • headaches or migraines after short sessions, including one player with MS and colour blindness who says the streaky light triggers migraines,
  • having to quit a session early, and in a few cases refunding their beta access,
  • feeling like they are squinting all the time in foggy zones.

Other US threads include "Had to quit the game today because of my eye fatigue and migraines" and a request titled "Feature Request (Accessibility): Option to disable or reduce fog." There's a similar thread on the EU forums.

Not everyone agrees. Some testers like the new look. In the PvP-minded replies there's a real argument that a fog toggle would help people spot enemies from farther away, which is a fair reason for Blizzard to be careful about a full off switch. Many of the people asking for an option say a slider that reduces the fog would be enough.

What still reduces the fog

None of these are from Blizzard. They are what testers report working on the current beta build, so results will vary.

SettingWhat testers report
Shadow Quality at Good or higherOne tester says Low shadows make the fog worse. Others saw no change.
Compute Effects offReported to cut some fog. One player says the fog toggle in this menu no longer works either.
/console volumefog 0Still thins the fog for some players, no longer removes it.
/console weatherdensity 0Reduces rain. Worth a try once heavy weather reaches your zone.
Lower Bloom intensityHelps with the washed-out glare that some players find worse than the fog.

If fog is causing you real discomfort, stop playing and post in the beta forum with your graphics settings and a screenshot. Specific, reproducible reports got quick attention on the Mac graphics bugs earlier in the beta, as we covered in the September 23 hotfix dispatch. One player there wrote up eight Mac graphics bugs with repro steps, and Kaivax replied in that thread to thank them for it.

What Blizzard has said

Only the one line in the patch notes. Nobody from Blizzard has posted in the "Increased Weather Effects" thread since the teaser, or in any of the fog threads we checked on the US and EU forums, and we found no major outlet covering the complaints yet. One reply sums up the mood: "seems like a big accessibility issue, would love a blue post."

Removing a console workaround doesn't mean Blizzard won't add a proper setting later. The team took the command away as "unintended," which suggests it wants control over how the zones look. Whether that includes a fog slider for players who can't handle it is the open question. Forever is built on the modern client, which already has plenty of graphics options, as our system requirements breakdown covers.

We will update this page if Blizzard answers. For the rest of what's changed in the beta, see the beta hub or catch the fog on stream on the live Forever streams page.
