WoW Forever October 15 Beta Build: Arcane Blast Redesign, Frost Blast, Wands Need You Standing Still, and Raid-Wide Auras

The last big WoW Forever beta build before launch redesigned Arcane Blast, added Frost Blast to replace rank 1 Frostbolt, made wands and Auto Shot require 0.5 seconds standing still, turned totems and auras raid wide, rebuilt the Elemental Shaman tree and reshaped Shadow Priest. Every class change and what testers think of them.

THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 16, 2026

Short answer: the October 15 build is the biggest class patch since the level 30 update, and probably the last big one before launch. Mages got the most: Arcane Blast was redesigned, a new Frost Blast spell does what rank 1 Frostbolt used to, and Ice Lance was cut from 300% to 200% bonus damage on frozen targets. Elemental Shaman's tree was rebuilt around a returning Elemental Mastery. Shadow Priest gained a party Spirit buff. Wands and Auto Shot now need you to stand still for 0.5 seconds before firing, as they did in early WoW. Shaman totems, Battle Shout, Trueshot Aura, Moonkin Aura and Leader of the Pack are now raid wide. The build also reworked every race's racials, which we cover separately in our racial rework breakdown.

Kaivax took the beta down at 1:15 p.m. PDT on October 15 and posted the notes at 00:15 UTC on October 16. The maintenance thread passed 1,100 replies. The beta stays at level 30 until it closes after October 21.

Changes for every class

These affect everyone, so start here.

ChangeDetails
WandsMust stand still 0.5 seconds before shooting, "matching early versions of World of Warcraft"
Hunter Auto ShotSame 0.5 second stand-still rule. Auto Shot still fires while you cast Aimed Shot or Sniper Shot
Raid-wide buffsBattle Shout, Trueshot Aura, Moonkin Aura (spell crit only), Leader of the Pack (melee and ranged crit only), Grace of Air, Strength of Earth, Windfury and Flametongue Totems
ScrollsNow trigger the global cooldown
Draught of Predatory SensesNow a combat potion, shares the potion cooldown, shorter duration
Hunter optionNew "Auto Attack/Auto Shot" setting switches between melee and ranged for you

Raid-wide totems and auras matter most for raid composition. In Classic you stacked Shamans and Warriors into specific groups, and that juggling is mostly gone. Grace of Air no longer conflicts with Windfury or Flametongue, but Windfury and Flametongue still can't be used together.

Mage: three specs, three reworks

Arcane Blast is now a 1.5 second cast. Each cast grants you 15% of your Intellect as spell damage, stacking four times and lasting 15 seconds from the first stack. The mana cost still climbs with each stack. To pay for that, its damage and spell damage coefficient are both down 40%. Missile Barrage moved to the first row as a 2-point talent, and the new 16-point talent Arcane Wrath is a 3.5 second nuke that adds 5% of your maximum mana as spell power, on a 6 second cooldown.

Frost Blast is a new spell at level 24: 1.5 second cast, 40% slow, and it counts as Frostbolt for talents. Blizzard's note is direct about why: "The purpose of this spell is to provide the functionality formerly granted by Rank 1 Frostbolt despite the penalization of 'down-ranking'." It costs more mana and hits a little harder than the rank 1 Frostbolt kiters used to spam.

Frost also lost a third of its Ice Lance bonus (200% against frozen targets, down from 300%). That's the change PvP players were asking for after the level 30 Ice Lance fight, and it lands two days before the Forever Open duel tournament on October 17. Winter's Chill no longer adds crit. It now stacks a Cone of Cold damage bonus, and Cone of Cold's slow is stronger on the first four targets it hits.

Fire got Critical Mass back to 5 points (10% crit), a redesigned 3-point Fire Power that adds 1 to 3% damage per Fire effect on the target up to 12%, and Wake of Fire reverted to Improved Fire Blast with up to 15 extra yards of Fire Blast range.

Forum reaction is split. Frost players in "RIP Frost Mage" agree the Ice Lance cut was needed but say the Winter's Chill change pushes them toward AoE. Other classes are less sympathetic. A thread titled "Why does mage get to be the only class that bypasses the downranking penalties?" asks where everyone else's equivalent is, and a few posters claim Blizzard is tuning for streamers. That's a forum accusation, not something Blizzard has said, and a reply in the same thread points out that the game is being balanced at level 30, not 60.

Shaman: Elemental rebuilt, Enhancement frustrated

Elemental got the biggest single-spec rework in the build:

  • Elemental Mastery returns as the 31-point talent: Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst cast 0.5 seconds faster and Chain Lightning has no cooldown for 15 seconds, on a 3 minute cooldown.
  • Lava Burst moved up to the 21-point slot, gained a fourth rank, and lost its prerequisite.
  • Earthbound is now the 16-point talent, Call of Thunder is gone, and Call of Flame extends Flame Shock by up to 9 seconds.
  • Chain Lightning costs about 35% less mana on every rank.

Fire Nova's base damage and spell power coefficient were cut, with a big mana cost reduction to match. Enhancement Stormstrike now costs 8% of base mana instead of a flat 125, and Restoration's Water Shield triggers from any spell crit.

Enhancement players are not happy. "Just confused on what Enhancement Shamans real roll is in raid" passed 60 replies overnight. The opening post worries about a return to "Windfury slot machine gameplay" now that Fire Nova hits for less. Players in a separate thread also report that Flame Shock lost the extra range it used to get from talents. That isn't in the patch notes, so treat it as unconfirmed.

Priest: Shadow gets a raid job

  • Dark Inspiration (new, row 4): Mind Blast and fully channeled Mind Flay raise your party's Spirit by up to 15% for 10 seconds.
  • Improved Mind Flay now makes each tick do 10 or 20% more than the last, which rewards finishing the channel instead of clipping it.
  • Devouring Plague cooldown 24 seconds (was 1 minute). Shadow Word: Death cooldown 18 seconds (was 12). Vampiric Embrace 30 seconds (was 1 minute) and can't be resisted.
  • Devouring Contagion now spreads to two targets. Improved Fade and Shadow Infinity were removed.
  • Discipline's Mental Strength moved to row 2 and now gives up to 10% Intellect.

The complaint here is range. "Mind Flay changes with Oct 15th Patch" says the Improved Mind Flay rework took away the talent that pushed Mind Flay to 30 yards, so it's back to a shorter range than the rest of the Shadow kit. Several Shadow players also say Dark Inspiration only helps classes that regenerate from Spirit while casting.

Everyone else

  • Hunter: Fire and Ice traps can be active together, fire traps scale with attack power, and pets finally use your ranged crit when it's higher. Pet PvP tools were trimmed: Crocolisk Dismember is 25% healing reduction for 6 seconds on a 15 second cooldown (was 50% for 10 seconds every 6 seconds), and the Bat and Bird of Prey abilities got similar cuts.
  • Paladin: Salvation is no longer a Blessing, so it stacks with your other blessings, and a new Revoke spell removes it. Consecration's per-tick coefficient dropped to 0.042 (from 0.095), Seal of Righteousness lost a coefficient bug that nearly doubled its scaling, and Protection's Reckoning stores up to four charges again, as in Classic Era.
  • Warlock: Grim Reach and Destructive Reach give 10 or 20% more range to Affliction and Destruction spells. Shadow Mastery now gives up to 10% Shadow damage.
  • Druid: Furor keeps your energy when you shift to bear. Faerie Fire in bear form now generates threat. Shred is learned at 20.
  • Rogue: a few fixes, including an exploit that let Rogues swap specs to keep their energy full. Rogue threads are frustrated: "Blizzard - Once again, zero rogue changes that make a difference" sums up the mood.
  • Warrior: Slam no longer suffers spell pushback and Battle Shout is raid wide. Not much else.

Other notable changes

Horde players are now attacked on sight in the city of Dalaran, though the Dalaran dungeon is still open to them. Battleground Marks of Honor stack to 30. The Auction House shows an equippable level column, and level-up messages listing your new stats are back. New players get a tutorial. There's also a long gamepad list, including a swing timer on the reticle.

Testers have reported a few new bugs since the patch, including Rogue stealth bars and Warrior stance bars not swapping. Blizzard hasn't acknowledged that one yet.

What to do with this

If you're planning a main, the talent calculator is where to test the new Elemental, Arcane and Shadow trees, though some tooltips may lag behind this build. Our spellbook lists base spells by level. The tier list was written before this patch, so read it with these changes in mind. If you don't have beta access, Blizzard's stress test on October 19 is open to any WoW account, so you can try a class yourself for a few hours.
