WoW Forever Is Getting an RP-PvP Ruleset at Launch After All. Here's What Changed and What It Means for Name Reservation

A week after saying there were no plans for RP-PvP, Blizzard reversed course on October 22: WoW Forever will launch with a Roleplay-PvP ruleset on November 4, and Blizzard is trying to have it ready for name reservation on October 27. What Aggrend said, what isn't confirmed yet, and the faction-lock debate that started within hours.

THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 23, 2026

Short answer: yes, WoW Forever will have an RP-PvP ruleset at launch on November 4. Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield announced it on the forums on October 22, a week after he said on the official podcast that Blizzard had no plans for one. Blizzard is also "working hard" to let you pick RP-PvP when name reservation opens on Tuesday, October 27, but that part is a goal, not a promise. If it isn't ready on day one of reservations, you may have to wait to claim names there. That makes five rulesets in total: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying (the PvE one), Roleplay-PvP, and Hardcore, which Blizzard still says comes "sometime after launch."

What Blizzard said

Aggrend's post went up at 8:33 a.m. PDT on October 22. The key lines:

"Over the last few days, we've carefully examined what it would take to add it to WoW Forever and decided to go for it. We will add a Roleplay-PVP Ruleset for launch on November 4."

And on reservations: "We're also working hard to make it so that you can select the Roleplay-PvP ruleset and reserve names there next week when our Name Reservation period begins on Tuesday, October 27."

Clay Stone, associate production director on Forever, posted the same news on X five minutes later. That post had about 1,800 likes and 73,000 views by the morning of October 23. Blizzard also updated its "Choose Your Ruleset" news article with a note that "The Roleplay-PvP Ruleset is now arriving with the launch of WoW: Forever on November 4." The body of that article still lists only the original four rulesets, so don't be confused if you read it and don't see a separate RP-PvP entry.

Why this is a reversal

On the October 15 podcast, Aggrend gave three reasons against RP-PvP. Grobbulus in 2019 was a one-off. Every RP-PvP realm since, Season of Discovery's Crusader Strike above all, turned into a plain PvP realm once streamers and their communities moved in. And the RP community is small enough that splitting it across two rulesets in a realmless game risked leaving both thin. "We don't have any plans right now," he said, "but you know, never say never." We covered that episode in detail in No RP-PvP in WoW Forever for Now.

The forums didn't accept it. The "RP-PVP is a must!" thread was already the busiest on the Forever forum before the podcast, and the follow-up threads kept climbing all week. Aggrend's new post gives no new reasoning beyond "we really appreciate the feedback and comments on this." Blizzard hasn't said what it found when it "examined what it would take," or how it plans to stop RP-PvP going the way Crusader Strike did.

What's confirmed and what isn't

Status

Name reservation itself hasn't changed. It opens October 27 at 1:00 p.m. PDT in North America and 18:00 CET in Europe, for accounts that bought the Heroic Pack, Epic Pack or Warcraft Forever Collection. You get three characters per account across all rulesets combined, and names are first and last, unique per region. Our realmless explainer covers how names and rulesets work without a server list.

That three-character limit is the practical problem for anyone who already planned their names around four rulesets. A slot spent on RP-PvP is a slot not spent on PvP or Normal. If you were going to park an RP character on the PvE Roleplaying ruleset only because RP-PvP didn't exist, you can now wait and see whether RP-PvP shows up in the character creation screen on the 27th.

The reaction, and the worry

The announcement thread passed 340 posts in under a day, and the top replies were relief. "Well there it is, sometimes they do listen to feedback after all," read the most-liked reply, which went on to ask Blizzard to "fix dungeon XP" next. (Blizzard has said it will hold firm on dungeon XP.)

The second theme arrived just as fast: enforcement. A player who had been on both Grobbulus and Crusader Strike asked Blizzard to "make sure to enforce the rules so we don't have a crusader strike 2.0," and suggested moving repeat offenders to the non-RP version of their ruleset. A separate thread, "RP-PvP & PvP Faction Lock," reached 144 posts by the next morning. Its opening post asks that anyone who rolls Alliance on the PvP ruleset be limited to Alliance on RP-PvP, so the new ruleset doesn't become "an overflow for PvP ruleset people to make cross-faction alts." The author later added that limiting each account to one PvP-enabled ruleset would also work. Blizzard hasn't replied to either idea.

Not everyone is happy. A thread titled "Aggrend was right about RP-PvP" argues that "announcing this two weeks before launch feels like a huge mistake," that splitting PvP players "risks undermining the whole point of mega servers," and that Blizzard should have waited to see how populations settled. The other side answered with its own thread, "Don't Blame RP-PvP for YOUR Weak Community."

Both sides have a fair point. A realmless system should cope with a smaller ruleset better than old realms did, since layers fill from the whole region rather than one server. But Aggrend's own Crusader Strike story was about who moves in, not how many, and nothing announced so far addresses that.

What to do before October 27

If you want RP-PvP, keep one of your three reservation slots free until you see the ruleset list on the 27th. If you're going regular PvP, nothing changes for you, though the layering complaints from the beta are still the bigger factor in how world PvP will feel. Still picking a character? The best race for each class and the tier list are up to date with the final beta builds.
