WoW Forever Bans GDKP. Here Is Blizzard's Reasoning and What Replaces It.

Josh Greenfield confirmed at the September 17 Q&A that gold-bid raids are not allowed in World of Warcraft: Forever. Why, how the economy will be managed instead, the return of Tarnished Undermine Real, and the warning to gold buyers.

THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · TRANSCRIBED FROM THE VOD, SEPTEMBER 17, 2026

GDKP is not allowed in World of Warcraft: Forever. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield said it on the September 17 developer Q&A, in nine words: "No, we are not going to allow GDKP." Season of Discovery banned it in 2024; Forever, a permanent game, keeps the ban from day one.

The three reasons, in Blizzard's words

First, the guild. In regions where GDKP has been popular longest, Greenfield said, it reaches "a level of ubiquity that it can kind of overtake the traditional guild structure," and Forever's first design pillar is to "nurture and protect social experiences," which "also means the traditional guild structure."

Second, the door. Gold-bid raids are "a really big barrier to entry for new players or players that just don't have as many resources." The established carry makes money; the newcomer "oftentimes they have to buy gold to buy into it."

Third, the laundry. "GDKP is an excellent way for bad actors to launder large sums of gold," which makes it harder for Blizzard to claw gold back when it actions buyers, sellers and bots.

What replaces it

Greenfield framed the usual counter-argument, "I need GDKP to afford consumables," against SoD's experience without it: "the economy was excellent. For a version of vanilla WoW, it was very, very good." The reason, he said, is that the team "was constantly managing the inflow and outflow of resources," turning knobs on things like Elemental Earth and Dreamfoil when a new phase made them scarce.

Forever gets the same treatment, plus one system by name: the Tarnished Undermine Real, the SoD currency Greenfield compared to Emblems of Justice. It comes with resource boxes containing random materials, and the drop rates inside those boxes are a lever the team can pull when the auction house runs dry of something. It also gives dungeons replay value at 60, which is the other half of the answer to "what do I do without GDKP runs."

The warning

On real-money trading: "We've been probably too lenient on gold buyers and it's been a little bit easy to get around some of our actions before, and we are taking this very seriously." Then, as someone with a 22-year-old account: "It's not worth losing any of your accounts permanently. So I would very strongly recommend that you don't do it."

Read that with the earlier "no plans" for a WoW Token. Forever is closing every route that turns real money into raid loot at once: no GDKP, no Token, no boosts, and bans for buyers rather than only sellers.

What it means for your guild

Every tier ships a 10-player and a 20-player raid, Jones confirmed in the same Q&A, and Onyxia's Lair at 40 is at launch. There is no flex. That is the loot ecosystem GDKP would have parasitised, and it is the one Blizzard wants you to build a guild around. Loot council and DKP are your options; the hidden item stats decision means you will be building them without a BiS list for the first tier either.
