THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 20, 2026
Short answer: in WoW Forever you can't seal twist the old way. Blizzard removed it from the baseline class and put a gentler version into Twist of Light, the 31-point Retribution capstone. When you swap one damage Seal for another, it leaves an "Echo", and your next melee swing gets both Seals. Holy Shock moved up to the 21-point slot so you can skip twisting and play a Shockadin hybrid instead. Blizzard laid all of this out in its Paladin class deep dive on October 15, the last of the series. On the forums, Retribution players are split. Some want manual twisting back as a skill test. Others want the talent replaced with something that has nothing to do with swing timers.
What changed for every Paladin
The baseline kit changed more than any one tree. These are the parts that matter whatever spec you play:
| Change | What it does |
|---|---|
| Holy Strike (level 6) | New instant attack: 50% weapon damage as Holy, plus a bonus per rank |
| Judgement | No longer uses up your Seal |
| Seal of Fury (level 10) | New tanking Seal: flat Holy damage per swing, a shield worth 50% of that damage, and a Judgement that taunts from 10 yards |
| Consecration (level 20) | Baseline for everyone. Full damage on the first 4 enemies that enter it, very little on the rest |
| Salvation | No longer a Blessing, so it stacks with one. The raid version is Mass Salvation, and Revoke takes it off |
| Lay on Hands | 20 minute cooldown (was 1 hour) |
| Resistance auras | Raid-wide within 30 yards |
The Consecration cap is there on purpose. Blizzard says capping it at four targets keeps Paladin threat "at parity with Warriors' Thunderclap," and that this is "critical to maintaining the combat feel of Classic Era." The Seal of Fury taunt is the change tanks will notice most: a 10-yard reach, where Growl and Taunt have 5. Blizzard also kept the old weaknesses. The post ends by saying Paladins still have "no interrupt and no way to slow enemy movement."
Holy: Holy Shock moves up, and Shockadin is official
Holy Shock is now the 21-point gold medal talent (it was the 31-point one), and its cooldown drops from 30 seconds to 10. Blizzard calls this deliberate, saying it creates "more flexibility for hybrid Shockadin builds." Divine Precision backs that up with up to 18% Holy spell hit, because Blizzard doesn't plan to put hit on plate healing gear.
The new 31-point Holy talent is Light's Vigil. You put it on a target, and your next Holy Shock on that target skips its cooldown. On an ally, it heals their whole party. On an enemy, it adds Holy damage and refunds 75% of the mana. Blizzard's example is a Holy Paladin who sets Vigil up on several raid groups before a big damage event and then fires Holy Shocks back to back. Divine Favor moves down to the 16-point slot, and Infusion of Light cuts the cast time of Holy Light after a crit, so healers aren't pushed into spamming Flash of Light.
Protection: real cooldowns at last
Protection gets two gold medal talents that work like buttons other tanks already have:
- Templar's Bulwark (21 points): a shield worth 100% of your maximum health for 8 seconds on a 5 minute cooldown. It applies Forbearance, so you can't use it after a Divine Shield or Lay on Hands.
- Swift Judgement (16 points): instantly finishes your Judgement cooldown and makes the next one free. Blizzard pitches it as the answer to a resisted taunt, or a way to taunt two targets in quick succession.
Improved Seal of Fury gives you mana back each time one of the Seal's shields is used up, and more of it when the attacker is higher level than you, so it scales up on raid bosses. Reckoning now triggers from blocks as well as crits, capped at once every 1.5 seconds. The October 15 build also brought back Classic's four stored Reckoning charges, which the deep dive had listed as a known bug.
Retribution: Sacred Arbiter, Champion of the Light and Twist of Light
The Retribution tree got the most new talents and the most arguments.
Sacred Arbiter (16 points) makes Holy Strike refresh every Judgement on the target, including ones cast by other Paladins. That's raid utility: one Retribution Paladin can keep Wisdom, Light and Crusader up at the same time.
Champion of the Light turns Intellect into spell damage, and it has been cut twice during the beta. It started at 100% of your Intellect as damage and healing. The deep dive says it was then cut to 60% and limited to damage only, "to keep it from becoming too strong for Holy Paladins who give up many Holy talents to go overly deep into Retribution." The October 15 build cut it again, to 10/20/30%. The same build fixed a bug that had given Seal of Righteousness "almost twice as much benefit from Spell Damage than intended" and lowered Consecration's per-tick coefficient from 0.095 to 0.042. Any Retribution Paladin who levelled in the first month is now hitting noticeably softer. Our October 15 build breakdown has the full list.
Twist of Light is the capstone. It cuts the mana cost of your Seals by 20%. When you replace Seal of Command, Righteousness, Fury or Justice with another Seal, you get an Echo, and your next melee attack applies the old Seal's effect as well as the new one. Blizzard says it "retains the engaging gameplay of swapping between multiple Seals while making it more intuitive and less stringent on timing windows."
In Classic Era, twisting meant swapping Seals in the fraction of a second before a slow two-hander landed, so that one swing triggered both. It was a quirk that skilled Retribution players learned to exploit. Forever removes that baseline, so without the talent you can't twist at all.
Why Retribution players are fighting about it
Two forum threads show both sides.
"Ret Paladin - Twist of Light Issue and Desired Changes" has been going since October 1. On the morning of October 20 it had 277 posts, more than 5,300 views and 836 likes. The opening post argues that Twist of Light automates the one skill-based thing Retribution had. It points out that a player who could already twist gets no extra damage from the capstone, and that Retribution and Demonology are the only two of 27 specs whose level 40 talent is a passive. Its fix is an in-game swing timer with a twist indicator, to teach new players without lowering the ceiling. It also asks for Seal of Blood, or something like Season of Discovery's Seal of Martyrdom, and for Crusader Strike as the signature Retribution button.
"Get rid of twist of light", posted on October 18, wants the opposite. It had 124 posts by October 20. The opening post says nobody wants to watch their white hits and asks for a Seal mastery that runs two Seals at once. The most-liked reply says "i absolutely hate seal twisting" and asks for Avenging Wrath and attack speed instead. Others in the thread suggest a cleave capstone, since Retribution has little multi-target damage beyond Consecration, which drains mana fast. A few posters accuse Blizzard of designing around streamers. Nobody offered any evidence for that.
Both threads want Twist of Light changed, for opposite reasons. One side thinks it's too easy, the other thinks twisting shouldn't be the capstone at all.
What the developers have said
The designers took this on directly in the second WoW Forever podcast on October 1. The panel was Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield, Aidan Moon and Kris Zierhut, with Sodapoppin as guest. The Paladin section starts around 35 minutes in, and the auto-generated captions don't always make clear who is speaking, so the quotes below aren't credited to a named designer.
One designer said Holy Strike's long cooldown is there "because we don't want you just alternating those two buttons." He described the original Paladin as deliberately reactive, with room to use Lay on Hands, Blessing of Protection or Freedom instead of being "rigidly focused on your hard rotation." The team knew going in that "some players despise seal twisting and some players love seal twisting," which is why Holy Shock sits next to Twist of Light as the way out.
Then a designer floated an idea live: keep Twist of Light, but give bonus damage to a twist pressed in the last 0.5 to 1 second before your swing. That way "you get the baseline functionality, but you get a bonus for doing it the way that it was before." Another pushed back on approachability. A new player who has to watch a swing timer for a half-second window ends up standing in fire "and the raid's yelling at them," he said. The panel also mentioned the Season of Discovery approach of two Seals at once with smaller numbers per Seal. They called all of these "other ideas", not plans.
That was almost three weeks ago. The October 8 and October 15 builds didn't change Twist of Light, and no Blizzard employee has posted in either thread. The deep dive's closing paragraph only says Blizzard will "continue listening to your feedback and refining the Paladin" before launch on November 4.
What to take into launch
If you're rolling a Paladin, the Holy and Protection changes don't depend on any of this. Holy keeps its single-target strength and gets real group healing. Protection finally has a survival cooldown and a ranged taunt.
Retribution is the open question. Right now you choose between Twist of Light and a Holy Shock hybrid, and Champion of the Light has been cut too far to make the hybrid an easy win. If you hate swing timers, plan around the Shockadin path or wait for launch notes. Dual spec arrives at level 40 (details here), so you can keep a Holy or Protection spec for dungeons while this gets sorted out. The talent calculator lets you test both Retribution routes. Check the current percentages against this page, because Champion of the Light changed in the last build. If you're still picking a race, Undead Paladin and the other new race combos and the October 15 racial rework are worth reading first.
