WoW Forever Character Transfers, Cloning and Hardcore: What Is Confirmed and What Isn't

Can you move a Classic Era or Anniversary character to WoW Forever? Not announced. The only transfer that exists is out of Hardcore on death. Every confirmed rule, and the gaps.

THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED SEPTEMBER 17, 2026

Two questions, one answer each.

Can I transfer or clone my Classic Era or Anniversary character into WoW Forever? Not announced. No Blizzard post, panel, interview or the September 17 Q&A mentions moving existing characters in. An official forum thread asking about it sits unanswered. Given the two-part name system, the realmless design and the rebuilt talent trees, assume Forever is a fresh start for everyone.

Is there Hardcore, and when? Confirmed to exist, arriving after the November 4 launch, with no date. It is not in the beta. At the Q&A, Nora Mills confirmed that when it arrives "it will be a choice like RP or PvP," a fourth ruleset picked at character creation.

Transfers between rulesets probably exist

Mills, explaining at the Q&A why you cannot hop between rulesets on one character: "It's a lot like current WoW where basically without a character transfer, you're not just going to be able to flip flop." That phrasing implies a paid character transfer service between Normal, PvP and Roleplay, as in Classic. It was not announced as a feature and no price or restrictions were given, so treat it as implied rather than confirmed.

The one transfer that is confirmed

Hardcore in Forever is a sealed ruleset. Nothing carries in: no Legacy points, no collections, no gold. But when a Hardcore character dies, it can transfer out permanently to any other ruleset, including PvP, and continue. Progress flows out of Hardcore and never back in. That is the entire transfer system Blizzard has described.

What Hardcore rules are confirmed

  • One life. Death is permanent for that character on the Hardcore ruleset.
  • The dead character may move to Normal, PvP or Roleplaying and keep playing.
  • Hardcore is its own ecosystem under the realmless design: one shared Hardcore world per region, with the Familiar Faces matchmaking layer.
  • It launches after November 4. Trackers say winter 2026; Blizzard has given no date.

Not confirmed: whether Forever's Hardcore keeps Classic Hardcore's rules on trading, the auction house, dungeon lockouts and duels to the death; whether there is a Hardcore-specific leaderboard; and whether the transfer out costs anything.

What a fresh start actually costs you

Less than in any previous Classic launch. Legacy points are account-wide and earned by challenges any character can complete. Reputations unlock account-wide perks. Transmog appearances collect across characters. And there is no realm to pick, so the "wrong server" mistake cannot happen. What you lose is the character itself: gear, gold and levels stay on Era.

If Blizzard announces cloning during the beta, this page gets updated first. The Q&A recap has everything that was answered.
