THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 16, 2026
Short answer: the October 15 beta build removed every weapon specialization racial. Humans now get 2% crit chance with any weapon (Ruthless), Orcs get 1% crit chance (Savage), and Dwarves get 2% more crit damage and healing (Earth Fury). Tauren lose their 1% hit for the same crit damage bonus. Blood Fury's cooldown goes from 2 to 3 minutes, Shatter Curse drops from 15% to 5% magic damage reduction, and Undead Touch of the Grave now has a 25 second internal cooldown. Troll, Skyborne, Night Elf and Gnome all came out ahead. Kaivax posted the notes just after midnight UTC on October 16, and the forums had more than a dozen racial threads within six hours.
None of this came out of nowhere. According to Icy Veins' and Warcraft Tavern's write-ups of the October 8 WoW Forever podcast, the developers said the Orc and Troll active racials might be too strong and that the weapon passives might change again or be replaced altogether. The Blood Fury change and the weapon spec removal are that plan landing. Troll's Berserking, oddly, was left alone and Troll got a buff instead.
These are beta numbers with five days of testing left (the beta closes after October 21), so expect a few to move again before launch on November 4.
Every racial change in the build
| Race | Change |
|---|---|
| Human | Sword Specialization replaced by Ruthless: 2% increased critical strike chance |
| Orc | Axe Specialization replaced by Savage: 1% increased critical strike chance |
| Orc | Blood Fury cooldown 3 minutes (was 2) |
| Orc | Shatter Curse now dispels Curses and Banes instead of granting immunity. Magic damage taken reduced by 5% (was 15%) |
| Dwarf | Mace Specialization replaced by Earth Fury: 2% increased critical damage and healing |
| Dwarf | Find Treasure also gives a chance at extra items from most chests |
| Tauren | Endurance: 2% increased critical damage and healing (was 1% hit chance) |
| Tauren | Plainsrunning also gives 3% mounted speed, but you now have to keep moving a minimum distance per second |
| Tauren | Cultivation cooldown 15 minutes (was 60). War Stomp cooldown 90 seconds (was 2 minutes) |
| Undead | Touch of the Grave: 30% proc chance for casters, 20% for Paladins, Rogues and Warriors, 25 second internal cooldown |
| Undead | Will of the Forsaken is unavailable while under Scatter Shot |
| Gnome | Eureka! is now an 8 second buff with no charges. Same 10% damage and 10% cost reduction. Now works on Power Word: Shield |
| Night Elf | Quickness movement speed now stacks with other speed increases |
| Troll | Regeneration: 20% of health regen continues in combat (was 10%) |
| Skyborne | Wind Blessed haste 3% (was 1%). Walk on Air cooldown 90 seconds (was 2 minutes) |
| Skyborne | Skysight and Read Leyline can be cast while moving. Read Leyline minimum duration 30 seconds (was 20) |
| Skyborne | More Elemental Convergence and Leyline spawn points in most Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor zones |
Two extra notes on the Undead change. Blizzard says Touch of the Grave "no longer scales with Shadow increases on the target or the caster," and no longer loses power when you cast a lower rank spell: "This shouldn't have been in place because it's a racial, not a Class spell or ability." So each proc can hit harder than before, but you'll see far fewer of them.
The weapon racials are gone, and that's the big one
For two decades, race choice for melee came down to which weapon you'd be holding. Forever had already changed the weapon racials once, from weapon skill to a crit bonus while the right weapon was equipped. This build drops the weapon condition completely.
That's good news for anyone who didn't want their loot table chosen by their race. A Human Rogue no longer needs a sword to get the 2%, and an Orc Shaman no longer needs an axe. Our best race page used to pick races around weapon types, and that logic no longer applies.
The trouble is the numbers. Human gets 2% crit chance and Orc gets 1%, which is what the old Sword and Axe versions gave too. The difference is that the old Human bonus needed a sword and the new one doesn't. A thread titled "Orc Racial 1% Crit, Human 2%" asks why the gap survived the rework. The replies make the obvious counterpoint: Orcs still have Blood Fury and Humans have nothing like it. That's true, but Blood Fury just lost a third of its uptime, so the counterpoint is weaker than it was a day ago.
Crit damage instead of crit chance
Dwarf and Tauren got the strangest deal. Both now get 2% increased critical damage and healing, and the forums do not rate it. The most active thread, "2% crit damage racials are TERRIBLE," argues you'd need around 50% crit for the bonus to match a flat damage racial. A separate thread asks the obvious question in its title: "In what universe is 2% crit chance equivellent to 2% crit damage?"
The rough math backs them up. At 20% crit, 2% more crit damage adds about 0.4% to your total output. At 40% crit it's about 0.8%. One point of crit chance at a 2x multiplier is worth about 1%. Blizzard hasn't said whether the 2% is multiplicative or added to the crit multiplier, and one poster points out that with talents like Vengeance already adding 100% crit damage, an additive bonus would be worth even less.
Tauren players feel this most, because the old 1% hit was a real stat for Druids and Shamans. The "Blizzard has killed Taurens" thread passed 70 replies overnight. Not everyone agrees: one reply calls it "a nice, big buff" and says they're now excited to play a Tauren Druid. The Plainsrunning mount speed bonus, the faster War Stomp and the Cultivation cooldown dropping from an hour to 15 minutes all helped. The Plainsrunning movement requirement also closes a known trick. Blizzard's note says "Stutter-stepping is no longer sufficient to maintain the effect."
Dwarves come out of it with a minor chest-loot perk. "Dwarf Racials NERFED?" makes the case that 1% crit with a mace beat 2% crit damage with anything, and for most specs that holds.
Undead: the angriest threads
"RIP Undead" hit 80 replies and "Undead racial nerf was insane" passed 45 in the hours after the patch. The thread starters accept that Touch of the Grave was too strong for tanks pulling big groups. Their complaint is that a 25 second internal cooldown makes it an occasional bonus instead of something you build around. One poster suggested Blizzard "might as well just make it a 100% proc chance at this point" if consistency was the goal. Blizzard's notes do say the change was meant to "make benefit more consistent."
The "RIP Undead" thread starter asks why Blizzard would "heavily nerf the race that already had the weakest racial," and plenty of replies agree. They still have Will of the Forsaken, which matters more in PvP than anything on this list, and Cannibalize still returns mana.
Winners
- Gnome. Eureka! went from three charges to an 8 second window, so a fast caster or an energy-dumping Rogue gets far more out of it. The "Eureka racial too strong now?" thread already has players calling it "busted in PvE." Periodic effects still don't benefit, so DoT specs gain nothing.
- Troll. Regeneration doubled to 20% in combat on top of Berserking. Warlocks who Life Tap get the most from it.
- Skyborne. Wind Blessed tripled from 1% to 3% haste, and both Skyborne actives now work while moving. The "Skyborne Racial Disparity" thread argues Skysight's speed buff is still weaker than High Order's Read Leyline, since most Windshaper classes already have better movement speed.
- Night Elf. Quickness stacking with other speed effects is small, but it's a straight buff for Druids and Hunters.
What this means for your race pick
If you picked your race for a weapon, that reason is gone, and you should look again. The flat crit racials (Human 2%, Orc 1% plus Blood Fury) are now the cleanest damage bonuses in the game. Gnome is the pick for burst casters until Blizzard trims Eureka again, and it has been trimmed twice already. Tauren and Dwarf are now picks for their actives (War Stomp, Stoneform) more than their passives.
We've updated the racials list and the best race for every class picks for this build. If you want the class side of the patch (the Arcane Blast redesign, Frost Blast, wands and Auto Shot needing you to stand still, and raid-wide auras), it's in our October 15 build breakdown. For context on why Blizzard keeps tuning gnomes, the October 1 build has the second Eureka nerf.
Blizzard hasn't responded to any of the racial threads yet. With the October 19 stress test on the way and the beta closing two days later, any follow-up changes would land either in a final beta build or at launch.
