WoW Forever's Final Racial Pass: Orcs Get Command Back, Dwarves Get 1% Hit, Tauren Run at 60% and Humans Lose Half Their Crit

Blizzard posted a final racial tuning pass on October 26, the night before name reservation and with the beta already closed. Every change for Human, Dwarf, Tauren, Orc and Skyborne, why Blizzard says it made them, what the 300-post reaction thread is angry about, and what it means for the race you reserve today.

THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED OCTOBER 27, 2026

Short answer: on the evening of October 26, with the beta closed and name reservation opening the next day, Blizzard posted a "final pass" on racials. Humans drop from 2% to 1% crit but get 10% Spirit instead of 5%. Dwarves swap 2% crit damage for 1% hit. Tauren lose every offensive modifier on Endurance and get a Plainsrunning that caps at 60% run speed but no longer touches mounts. Orcs lose Savage and get Command back, 5% pet damage for Hunters and Warlocks. Skyborne haste falls to 2%, and Read Leyline and Skysight become short cooldowns with an hour-long "Attuned" or "Charged" state earned at a ley line or convergence. Undead, Troll, Night Elf and Gnome were not touched. None of it will be tested before launch on November 4. The weapon specialization racials are not coming back, and Blizzard said why.

Kaivax added the notes to the beta development notes thread at 20:35 UTC on October 26. Within ten hours the first reaction thread had 311 posts and 9,300 views, and the forum front page was most of the way to being a racial forum. This is the second rework in eleven days. The October 15 pass deleted the weapon specializations and gave Human, Orc and Dwarf flat crit racials in their place. This one walks two of those three back.

Every change in the October 26 pass

RaceChangeWas
HumanRuthless: 1% critical strike chance2%
HumanThe Human Spirit: 10% Spirit5%
DwarfEarth Fury removed. New passive Artisan's Precision: 1% hit chance with spells and attacks2% crit damage and healing
TaurenPlainsrunning: 2% movement speed per stack, 60% maximum. No longer increases mounted speed1% per stack, 30% maximum, plus 3% mounted speed
TaurenEndurance: 5% health, nothing else5% health plus 2% crit damage and healing (1% hit before October 15)
OrcSavage (1% crit) removed. Command returns: Hunter and Warlock pets deal 5% more damage1% crit for everyone
Skyborne (both)Wind-Blessed: 2% haste3% (1% before October 15)
Skyborne (High Order)Read Leyline: 50% health and mana regeneration for 15 seconds. Cannot be used while Innervate is active, and Innervate overwrites it. Using it at a ley line grants Attuned for 1 hour, which raises the bonus to 100%. Attuned persists through death100% regeneration, at least 30 seconds, 15 minutes near a ley line
Skyborne (Windshaper)Skysight: 15% movement speed for 15 seconds. Using it at an elemental convergence grants Charged for 1 hour, which raises the bonus to 30%. Charged persists through death10% movement and mounted speed, 30 seconds, 15 minutes near a convergence

Blood Fury, Will of the Forsaken, Touch of the Grave, Berserking, Eureka! and Elune's Light are all exactly where the October 15 build left them. Wowhead's Forever database still shows the beta tooltips, because there is no client build to read the new ones from.

Why Blizzard says it did this

The note is short, and worth reading in full because it tells you how the team is thinking about racials going forward. The team says it has "prioritized racial identity, which means that some races will naturally be slightly more effective than others at certain combat roles." Where the October 15 build had replaced class-flavoured racials with generic ones, "we're rolling those changes back." Command for Orcs and hit for Dwarves are that sentence in practice.

The one thing that is not rolling back is the weapon racials. Blizzard says they have "a strong fantasy component" but "it is not healthy in the long run for future raid and dungeon loot tables to be evaluated through the lens of 'required' weapon types." That is the clearest statement yet that Sword, Axe and Mace Specialization are gone for good, and it is a sensible reason. A Forever where every Human Warrior needs a sword off every boss is a Forever where loot design gets harder every patch.

The last line matters for anyone hoping the numbers settle: the team is "doing a tuning pass on some of the remaining passive bonuses to help ensure that they aren't skewing outcomes in a way that limits player preferences." Read that as: if a race becomes the only sensible choice for a role, expect it to be trimmed, launch or no launch.

Race by race

Dwarf is the clear winner. One percent hit beats 2% crit damage for every spec in the game, and the thread titled "Dwarf racial nerf is insane" was told so by its own replies within three minutes. The maths is the same one players used against the October 15 change: 2% more crit damage at 20% crit is worth about 0.4% output, while 1% hit is 1% more of everything that would have missed, and it frees a point of hit on your gear. For the only Alliance Shaman that is a real upgrade, and Dwarf Priests and Paladins get it too. A reply in the "Who got buffed/nerfed?" thread calls it a "huge buff, 1% hit is way better than 2% crit dmg/healing, yes even for healers," and that is the consensus.

Humans traded damage for regen. Ruthless at 1% is now identical to the Orc Savage it outclassed eleven days ago, except Savage no longer exists. The Human Spirit at 10% is the headline. Spirit is the regen stat for Priests, Druids and Paladins in a game that has already pushed healers towards Spirit through itemization, and the "I feel forced to play human as priest?" thread opened within hours. The first reply has the right answer: Molten Core was cleared for years by Priests without it. But a 10% gap in a primary healing stat is bigger than anything Classic ever hung on a racial, and Horde Priest players, who have two races to choose from and neither with a regen passive, noticed.

Orcs are back to 2004. Command is the vanilla racial, 5% pet damage, and it does nothing for an Orc Warrior, Rogue, Shaman or Mage. Orc Hunters and Warlocks come out slightly ahead of where Savage left them. Everyone else lost 1% crit and kept a Blood Fury that is on a 3 minute cooldown since October 15. The new Orc Mage combo, one of the six new race and class pairs, now has nothing passive going for it beyond Hardiness.

Tauren have no offensive passive at all. That is the complaint, and it is accurate. Endurance went from 1% hit at BlizzCon to 2% crit damage on October 15 to 5% health only now. In exchange Plainsrunning doubles, but a long post from a player who tested Tauren all beta explains why that is worth less than it reads. Stacks build only while you keep moving without stopping, taking damage or clipping a wall, so maximum speed takes about two and a half minutes of uninterrupted running, and getting hit strips stacks fast. It is a road racial. In cities, dungeons and any fight it does nothing, and the 3% mounted speed from October 15 is gone with it. The counter-thread, "We all know 60% Plainsrunning is insane, right?", worries about Hunters kiting at 60% and stealthed Feral Druids crossing dungeons faster than anyone can walk, and its first reply makes the same point about stacks not building in stealth. Not everyone is upset. One reply in the "relax it with the Plainsrunning meme" thread says "They're freaking cows, man," and Output Lag reports Tauren players on Reddit mostly laughing about fast cows. The lifelong Tauren thread is at 78 posts and still climbing.

Skyborne lost the 15-minute buffs. This is the change people misread most. Under the beta rules, a High Order Skyborne who found a ley line got double regeneration for 15 minutes, and a Windshaper who found a convergence got 10% speed for the same window. Now both actives last 15 seconds whenever you press them, and finding the node gives you an hour-long state, Attuned or Charged, that makes each press stronger. The 30% speed does not last an hour. The Charged state does, and each Skysight inside it lasts 15 seconds. The notes do not mention the cooldown, which was 2 minutes in the beta. The regen version also gives way to Innervate, which one reply in the Skyborne thread says was the interaction that needed fixing in the first place. The "Skyborne racials are now a joke!" thread puts the loss plainly: the old version "rewarded you for going out of your way," and the new one is "an empowered cooldown, big whoop." Since Attuned and Charged persist through death, expect players to grab one on the way to a raid and log out to keep it.

Undead, Troll, Night Elf and Gnome: nothing. Undead players who were hoping the 25 second Touch of the Grave cooldown from October 15 would be revisited got silence. Gnome Eureka! and Night Elf Elune's Light are now the strongest offensive racials in the game and were not trimmed, which is most of why the "devs legit play Alliance" thread exists.

The dominant complaint is faction balance rather than any single number. A long feedback post argues that "every single Alliance race is extremely viable" while Orc, Tauren, Undead and Troll each lost something across the two passes, and Troll has "officially overtaken dwarf as the worst race in the game." The same post is honest enough to say the whole spread from best race to worst is under 2% damage. That is the fair reading. The passives are small. The problem is that the direction of travel has been Horde down and Alliance up twice in a row, on the night before players lock in a faction.

The other recurring ask is for a test. The beta closed on October 23. A thread titled "Can we have brief beta test?" asks Blizzard to open the servers for a few hours alongside character creation so the new Skyborne and Tauren mechanics get played before they are permanent. As of 07:30 UTC on October 27 no Blizzard employee has replied in any of the racial threads, and the development notes post is the only official word.

What it means for the name you reserve today

Name reservation opens at 1:00 p.m. PDT in North America and 18:00 CET in Europe today, and you pick a race when you create each reservation character. If you were choosing on racials, the short version is:

  • Dwarf is now a good pick for every class it can be, and the best Alliance Shaman is no longer a consolation prize.
  • Human is the Alliance healer race by a wider margin than before, and a slightly weaker DPS race than it was last week.
  • Orc is for Hunters and Warlocks. Orc Warriors and Rogues are still fine because of Blood Fury and Hardiness, not because of a passive.
  • Tauren is the tank and herbalist race, and you should go in knowing the run speed is for roads.
  • Skyborne is still a paid race with 2% haste, which is a real edge. Plan your ley line or convergence stops around raid nights.
  • Nothing changed for Undead, Troll, Night Elf or Gnome, so nothing in the new race and class combos ranking moves except Orc Mage and Dwarf Shaman.

We have updated the full racials list and the best race for every class picks for this pass. Keep in mind that Blizzard has now changed racials on September 24, October 15 and October 26. Pick the race you want to look at for a few hundred hours. The passive will move again.
