The Shaman Classic Discord Locked Itself in Protest the Day Before WoW Forever Launched. What Happened, What Shamans Want, and Why Other Shamans Disagree

On November 3 the 80,000-member Shaman Classic Discord went read-only to protest Blizzard's final Shaman changes for WoW Forever, then reportedly reopened the same evening. The moderators' complaints about Riptide, Improved Ghost Wolf, Lava Burst and spell power Enhancement, the Shamans who think the changes are great, the Warlock thread that followed, and what Blizzard has said (nothing yet).

THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED NOVEMBER 4, 2026

Short answer: On the morning of November 3, the moderators of the Shaman Classic Discord, a server of about 80,000 players, made every channel read-only in protest of the Shaman changes in Blizzard's November 2 development notes. They say they're upset about how the specs play, not damage: Riptide lost its upfront heal, Improved Ghost Wolf moved deep into the Enhancement tree, Elemental lost Lava Burst, and Enhancement looks like it wants spell power gear. Plenty of Shaman players on the forums like the changes and think the protest was an overreaction. Players reported the server open again by Tuesday evening. Blizzard hasn't responded, and the notes it posted on November 2 say no big tuning is planned before raids open on December 9. The Shaman you roll today is the Shaman you will level.

What happened, in order

The changes themselves landed late on November 2, in the last batch of development notes before launch. Here's how Tuesday went, all times UTC:

When (Nov 3)What happened
MorningThe Shaman Classic Discord goes read-only. Wowhead reports "all channels have been made read-only," including Classic Era, Mists of Pandaria and Season of Discovery channels that have nothing to do with Forever.
10:21First US forum thread about it, "Shaman ele Discord," goes up. It reaches 102 posts.
11:51"Shaman mods closed the discord over the changes" goes up. It's at 374 posts the next morning, the busiest Shaman thread of the day.
17:27Wowhead's post on X about the lockdown goes out. By the next morning it has about 186,000 views.
About 17:33The moderators post a longer follow-up explaining the protest (Wowhead dates it 9:33 a.m. Pacific).
From 22:55Forum posters start reporting that the Discord is open again. OutputLag updates its story to say the lockdown "appears to be over," based on a screenshot of a moderator writing "Doors are open again."

We couldn't see inside the server ourselves, so treat the reopening as reported. Several forum threads and OutputLag all describe it, and nobody has said otherwise.

What the moderators said

The first announcement was short. Wowhead quotes it in full; the key lines are "Community Feedback gets completely ignored and Class Fantasies are getting destroyed" and "Give us back our class and spec identities, and fantasies!"

The follow-up is more useful, because it says what they actually want. They write that the lockdown is "not an attempt at blackmail or coercion," that the server "will re-open regardless of the outcome," and that "this is not about damage output." They'd accept a hybrid tax "if the result is a cohesive class with strong class fantasy elements."

Their specific complaints, spec by spec:

  • Enhancement. Stormstrike got a big buff, but the moderators say Windfury Weapon won't be the raid imbue, and spell power and Intellect gear "appears to outperform physical or hybrid gear" once you count Maelstrom Weapon and Flametongue. For a spec built around a two-hander and Windfury, that feels backwards to them. The doubled Maelstrom Weapon proc rate and higher Mental Dexterity scaling push further in that direction.
  • Elemental. Blizzard picked Chain Lightning over Lava Burst, so Elemental has no second damage school for Nature-immune mobs or PvP, and Chain Lightning's mana cost keeps it out of single target. That leaves "a 2 button rotation." They also want Flame Shock to interact with something, Water Shield to stop eating charges on crit procs, and the old ranged Totemic Projection back.
  • Restoration. Riptide no longer heals up front. Its cooldown doubled to 12 seconds and it costs about 40% less mana. The moderators call it "a sad copy of Renew or Rejuvenation."
  • Everyone. Improved Ghost Wolf moved from the second row of Enhancement to the fourth. Most Shamans grabbed instant Ghost Wolf early, whatever their spec. Now an Elemental or Resto build has to put a lot more points into Enhancement to reach it. The moderators read this as Blizzard designing around Elemental in PvP, and say Resto shouldn't be "punished for its PvP perception" either.

The Wowhead database already shows the live Riptide: 230 mana at rank 60, 12 second cooldown, 953 healing over 15 seconds, and a 25% boost to your Chain Heal on that target. No direct heal.

The Shamans who like the changes

If you only read the protest, you'd think every Shaman main was furious. The forums say otherwise. A big group of Elemental players spent the whole beta asking for Lava Burst to go and for Lightning Bolt to be the spell again, and on November 2 they got it.

One reply in the "Shaman ele Discord" thread puts it plainly: "we literally got the changes we have been campaigning about for weeks now." The opening post of that thread argues the moderators don't "have the right to speak on behalf of everyone." "Why is there shaman drama they just got juiced?" (265 posts) points at the Enhancement buffs and asks what the problem is. A reply in another thread says Classic Elemental "didnt even have lava burst." Streamer FightinCowboy, planning an Enhancement alt, asked on X what the protest was even about, since "it looks like buffs across the board."

Even the people defending the changes tend to make two exceptions. The Riptide nerf comes up as "kind of a bummer" from one Resto player who otherwise likes the patch. Improved Ghost Wolf gets the most sympathy. One reply lists all the talents other classes treat as mandatory (Tactical Mastery, Omen of Clarity, Fear Ward) and asks why Ghost Wolf was the one that had to be pushed out of reach.

The mockery is real too. OutputLag notes that the top joke on r/classicwow replaced Lava Burst with "Burst of Tears," and replies to the reopening screenshot were mostly "Folded." OutputLag puts the joke past 1,600 upvotes, which we couldn't check because Reddit blocks us. On the EU forums, one thread opened by calling the whole thing "Devs Vs Dead Spec." Most of it is players laughing at each other rather than at Blizzard.

Does this kind of protest work?

Once. Wowhead and wowforever.be both point back to August 2025, when the retail Paladin Discord closed its Retribution channels because the spec felt "left behind and ignored." That closure lasted under a day, and Ret buffs were announced soon after. Wowhead adds that there was "no indication" the closure caused the buffs, given how fast the tuning came.

The Shaman protest also lasted under a day, and Blizzard has said nothing about it. Kaivax's most recent post is still the November 2 development notes, and that post sets the plan: apart from "bugs and serious outliers," Blizzard doesn't plan "big tuning changes between now and the opening of the raids next month," and expects a large pass once enough players are past level 30. Nobody should expect Riptide or Ghost Wolf to change before December.

It isn't only Shamans

The Forever forums spent November 3 arguing about almost every class. The other loud one was Warlock. "Is This a Joke? Warlock Changes" reached 170 posts. Its opening post calls Warlock "the least played class in the Beta" and lists the bland bug fixes next to the two nerfs: pets now get 2 health per point of your Stamina instead of 7.5, and Drain Soul's shard chance on damage was "reduced significantly." On the EU forums, "Warlock 73% pet hp nerf?" got 158 likes. That figure is right: 2 is about 73% less than 7.5.

The same thread has the other side. The second reply points out that Affliction's Wrack had its spell damage coefficient doubled and Destruction got a flat 10% more damage, and calls it "a massive, massive, massive buff to Affliction." Several replies agree the shard change is the only real loss.

Then there's the backlash to the backlash. "The complaining is insufferable. We are the problem" (83 posts) and "Complainers are a disease" sat near the top of the daily list beside the Shaman threads. The longest non-class thread, "How WoW Forever and Blizzard Devs made Raiders and Casuals hate each other for no reason" (349 posts), is really about the dungeon XP nerf, which Blizzard also hasn't moved.

What this means if you're rolling a Shaman today

Nothing changes in the next month, so plan around the patch as it stands:

  • Enhancement levels well. Stormstrike every 6 seconds and the doubled Maelstrom procs make it the strongest Shaman leveling spec on paper. Improved Ghost Wolf now sits on its fourth row, which an Enhancement build reaches anyway.
  • Elemental is a Lightning Bolt spec again. If that's what you wanted, you got it. Plan for mana: Water Shield is your main source and the moderators' complaint about it eating charges is fair to keep in mind on long pulls.
  • Restoration still heals with Chain Heal. Riptide is now a 12 second HoT you keep on the tank to boost Chain Heal on them. Healers already face slow dungeon leveling, so most Resto players will level as Enhancement and respec.

Check your build in the talent calculator before you spend points, and see our builds page for leveling setups. Our case for Shaman as the best class to start with was written before this patch. Enhancement still fits it, but Elemental and Resto are weaker picks than that piece describes. Our tier list will get a proper update once there's live data past level 30.
