WoW Forever Launch Night: Short Queues, Horde Locked Out of PvP, Near-Empty Cities and Lost Zeppelins. What Blizzard Has Fixed So Far

WoW Forever went live on November 4 with 10-minute queues, then hit faction creation locks on PvP, over-split layers that left capitals almost empty, boats and zeppelins lost at sea, and an Invite-a-Friend bug. What happened, what Blizzard said, and what's still open.

THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED NOVEMBER 5, 2026

Short answer: WoW Forever opened at 3:00 p.m. PST on November 4 and the servers held. Queues mostly stayed around ten minutes. The trouble was everything around them. Horde players on the PvP ruleset spent hours staring at "This faction is currently unavailable on this ruleset due to population imbalance". Layering was turned up so far that capitals showed eight people and Trade chat read "English - 46". Boats and zeppelins got lost at sea, so Blizzard dropped portals at the docks. A hotfix freed Invite-a-Friend players who were stuck at level 10. Blizzard developer Aggrend says the population numbers get tweaked today, November 5. On faction locks Blizzard has said nothing new, and the lock is working the way it said it would.

The launch itself went well

Kaivax posted the launch time on the morning of November 4: every region at once, 3:00 p.m. PST, which was 11:00 p.m. in the UK and 10:00 a.m. on November 5 in Sydney. Wowhead's live tracker had queue positions of 1,500 to 4,000 at 3:10 p.m. PST, with waits of 5 to 10 minutes, and by 4:15 it called the servers "very stable". Icy Veins ran a piece the next morning saying Forever had avoided the usual queue boss, and quoted Holly Longdale, the executive producer of World of Warcraft, on X: "At the risk of jinxing things, so far so goodish which is crazy by itself."

One early snag was the "Gameplay Rulesets unavailable" screen. Lots of players got through the queue and found PvE, PvP, RP and RP-PvP all greyed out (the US thread "Rulesets all unavailable?" reached 115 posts). Wowhead's fix, which worked for most people, was to back out and requeue.

Compare that with the name reservation opening on October 27, when Europe started two and a half hours late and North America got disconnects. The day-one tech this time was much better. The complaints were about design choices.

Horde locked on PvP

The biggest thread on the US Forever forum overnight was "This faction is currently unaivalable on this ruleset due to population imbalance". It opened at 23:18 UTC, a few minutes after launch, and had 203 posts and over 11,000 views by Thursday morning. A second thread, "Locked factions is such a weird sword to wanna throw yourself on", reached 181 posts. Its author says they work 12-hour shifts, their Discord community has played Horde for almost 20 years, and Horde creation was locked by the time they got home. One reply said they had been "refreshing and trying every minute for the past 2h50".

This is the system Blizzard announced on October 22. On the PvP ruleset, Forever "will include systems intended to help keep Horde and Alliance populations closer together, similar to the approach introduced in Season of Discovery, where new character creation could be temporarily limited for a faction when additional balance support was needed." The developers explained on the sixth Forever podcast that balance is tracked per ruleset, aiming for 50/50. During reservation week the same lock had already been hitting Horde on PvP.

There are two different messages, and players kept confusing them:

MessageWhat it seems to mean, from player reports
"This faction is currently unavailable on this ruleset due to population imbalance"The faction lock. Your faction is the majority on that ruleset right now.
"Creation of that type of character is currently throttled"A creation throttle. Several players say spamming Create triggers it, and others say it alternates with the faction message.

Neither message comes with a timer, and Blizzard hasn't said how big the gap has to be or how long a lock lasts. Some players got Horde characters made after a few retries. Others never did. In the early hours of Thursday, a thread titled "US Horde pvp waiting lounge" was going on the US forum.

The other side was just as loud. "Keep Faction Balance on PvP Servers" (47 posts) argues that Classic realms ended up at "80% Horde vs 20% Alliance", which the poster calls "basically a PvE experience for the Horde". Replies in the lock threads said the same thing more bluntly: launch, when everyone is level 1, is the cheapest time to balance a world, and fixing a 70/30 split after a month is much harder. A newer thread is literally titled "Faction Imbalance is unfixable once it starts".

The argument over why Horde is overloaded keeps coming back to racials. Some say Forsaken Paladins and Horde PvP racials are pulling people over. Other players point to what Alliance got, like the racial rework, the new boats, and a starter dungeon to match Ragefire. On the EU forum, a thread called "So sad to feel forced to play Alliance" came from a Mage who thinks Gnome racials are too good to pass up in PvP. If you're still picking, the racials page has every current racial side by side.

If you're locked out, the realistic options are to keep retrying at off-peak hours, roll Alliance on PvP, or play PvE until the lock lifts. Remember that Forever's PvP ruleset is one faction per account, so you can't make a Horde and an Alliance character there, and the PvE and PvP rulesets can't group with each other. Blizzard hasn't responded to the lock threads. Going by what it has said before, the lock is working as intended.

Why cities felt empty

The second big complaint was the opposite of a crowded launch. "Why do I see maybe 8 people inside the main city?" (108 posts) started with an Ironforge visit where Trade chat read "English - 46". Others reported "English 48" and "trade 84" and took the number to mean their layer. "Looks like Mega-servers were a Mega-fail" said the world felt like an old Era server. "Dead layers", "Less Layers!" and "Cities feel empty, reduce layering in cities" said the same thing in fewer words.

Blizzard answered at 06:35 UTC on November 5. Aggrend, a WoW game developer:

"We are aware of some issues with certain areas not feeling as populated as they should. We will be tweaking some numbers tomorrow to help things feel a bit more lively."

Our reading, which Blizzard hasn't confirmed, is that layers were capped low for launch night, and that this is part of why the queues stayed short. Forever runs each ruleset as one big world, with no realm list, and layering is how it holds everyone. During the beta, players complained about people vanishing at zone borders, and on the podcast Blizzard said there "will always be some amount of layering". The fix due Thursday is about how full each layer is, not removing layers.

Kaivax also posted a reminder on the EU forum at 23:44 UTC to check the in-game Language and Social settings, then log out and back in if anything wasn't set to your language. If your chat looks quiet or in the wrong language, check those first.

Boats and zeppelins lost at sea

At 06:39 UTC Aggrend posted about the other big bug:

"We are aware of some issues with transports such as boats and zeppelins becoming lost in the maelstrom for extended periods of time. As a temporary fix, we've spawned portals near most transport docks or inside of the zeppelin towers to help you move between continents if your boat gets lost."

He said a proper fix would go out in the morning, and the portals will be removed once that's confirmed working. If you're crossing between Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms today, look for the portal at the dock or in the tower before waiting for a ride.

Invite-a-Friend players stuck at level 10

If you joined with an Invite-a-Friend code, you may have spent the first night unable to level past 10, join a guild, form a party, trade or use some chat channels. Kaivax confirmed at 02:43 UTC on November 5 that a hotfix was live and suggested logging out and back in.

Smaller launch-day bugs

  • The Great Outdoors. The camping tutorial quest, The Great Outdoors, sometimes doesn't count "Sit near the campfire". Wowhead found that typing /sit while you're already sitting completes it. Our camping guide explains what the rest buffs do.
  • Nvidia drivers. Nvidia released a driver for Forever on launch day, and the US thread telling people to install it had 45 replies. If you have an Nvidia card and bad FPS, update before you try anything else.
  • "Too easy". A 58-post thread says leveling feels trivial. Replies split between "it's the same as Classic" and players who say the beta was harder before the November 2 damage increase. It's day one, so we're treating that one as opinion for now.

What to watch

The layer population tweak and the transport fix are both due on Thursday, November 5. Watch Trade chat numbers and how many people you see in capitals tonight. On faction locks, the question is whether Blizzard says anything about how long they last, or leaves it as a mystery timer. Also running this week is the Twitch drop for the Pouch of Violet Dust, a campfire toy that only lasts until December. You can follow the launch on our Forever live streams page.
