THE WOW FOREVER COLLECTION · DISPATCH · RESEARCH CHECKED NOVEMBER 8, 2026
Short answer: WoW Forever's layers swung from too empty to too full in about three days. On November 5 Blizzard developer Aggrend said the team would be "tweaking some numbers" so certain areas felt "a bit more lively". From early Friday, November 7, players in the US and EU started reporting packed zones, camped spawns and quest mobs that stay dead for 10 minutes or longer, and the complaints grew through Saturday. Blizzard has not said what it changed, when, or whether the weekend crowd is part of it. It also hasn't replied in any of the new threads. Until it does, the best move is to quest off-peak, group up for kill quests and leave the busiest caves for later.
How we got here
Launch night had the opposite problem. Forever runs each ruleset as one big world, and layering splits that world into copies so zones don't drown. On November 4 the split was aggressive. Players reported capitals with eight people in them and Trade chat reading "English - 46", and the US thread "Why do I see maybe 8 people inside the main city?" passed 120 posts. We covered that in our launch night dispatch.
At 06:35 UTC on November 5, Aggrend replied in that thread:
"We are aware of some issues with certain areas not feeling as populated as they should. We will be tweaking some numbers tomorrow to help things feel a bit more lively."
Kris Zierhut and Tim Jones said much the same in an interview with Crix published on November 5, about a day after launch: the team had spread players too thin and was raising layer density. We cover the rest of that interview in our launch week developer interviews roundup. Blizzard never posted to say the tweak was live. The November 6 hotfix notes, posted at 01:07 UTC on November 7, have one line under World about "improvements to the visibility of other players and their targets across relatively large distances." That is about how far away you can see other players, and it says nothing about how many players share a layer.
Over on the EU side, Kaivax had posted "Language and Social Settings" on launch night, asking players to check their Preferred Online Language and change it if it wasn't their own language. EU players then found that the language setting decides which layers you land on. Icy Veins reported on November 6 that picking French sent some players to a much busier "main layer".
What players are reporting now
The complaints started in the early hours of Friday, November 7, and by Saturday morning they had taken over both forums. These are the main threads as of 07:35 UTC on November 8:
| Thread | Forum | Opened | Posts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Questing is miserable - Layers overcrowded - mobs respawn too slow | US | Nov 8, 02:11 UTC | 85 |
| Please fix the layers? Far too many people | EU | Nov 7, 09:50 UTC | 71 |
| Please revert the layering change | EU | Nov 7, 10:22 UTC | 20 |
| Overcrowding and layering are ruining the leveling experience | EU | Nov 7, 08:17 UTC | 14 |
| Layering has been Overcorrected | US | Nov 7, 18:29 UTC | 13 |
The posts read much the same. An EU player who had complained earlier in the week that the world felt empty opened "Please revert the layering change" with an apology: "Since the reset that happened yesterday every zone I have been is completely packed with people and now I am unable to complete any quests." Another wrote that "Sitting in front of mob spawns for 50 minutes to tag a singular spawning mob isn't fun," and later said they were in Thousand Needles "waiting with around 50 other players to kill 5 harpies."
On the US side, "Layering has been Overcorrected" opens on Stranglethorn Vale: "STV is more players than mobs." In the biggest US thread, players name the centaur quests in Desolace as close to impossible, and one said a single mob spawn hadn't refreshed in 10 minutes. Several said they had abandoned quests because the targets were "perma dead".
Shared tagging makes it worse. Forever kept Classic's rule that the first player or group to hit a mob owns it, and the developers have called shared mob tagging one of the lines they won't cross. Instant-cast classes win most of the races, and one EU poster said exactly that.
Is it the change or the weekend?
Probably some of both, but that's our reading, and Blizzard hasn't confirmed either.
Several players point out that this is Forever's first weekend, so peak hours are longer and busier than Wednesday or Thursday. Others say the crowd showed up overnight on a weekday, before the weekend started. "if you didnt know there was an update this morning which caused this not the fact its weekend," one EU player replied. A US poster's version: "They made a change based on weekday usage, and then the weekend hit."
Respawn timers are a separate issue, and forum replies suggest they differ a lot by zone and by layer. The November 5 and 6 hotfixes nudged specific spawns both ways, faster for Deathstalker Erland and slower for the Grol'bolar troggs and some Dustwallow murlocs, but there has been no general change to respawn rates. That's why some players say respawns are near-instant on their layer while others wait ten minutes for the same mob type.
Not everyone hates it. A few replies say this is what a fresh launch should look like and that it will thin out in a week or two as players spread across level ranges. There's also some sniping between the "too empty" and "too full" crowds, which says a lot about how narrow the target is.
The Thousand Needles harpy cave bug
One spot is worse than the rest. Wowhead reported early on November 8 that layering "appears to be broken" inside Roguefeather Den in Thousand Needles, the harpy cave used by Test of Endurance and nearby Freewind Post quests. Players inside can see others attacking but not their targets, and they get hit by silence effects from harpies on other layers. Wowhead thinks the layers there are only partly merged. Grenka Bloodscreech and the Screeching Windcaller are slow spawns, so the cave backs up quickly. If your Test of Endurance objective doesn't update after you loot the claw, relog.
How to level around it this weekend
- Group for kill quests. Everyone in a group gets credit for a tagged mob, so the spawn race goes away. A couple of players in the EU threads said asking strangers to team up for a mine or a quest worked fine.
- Quest off-peak. Mornings in your region are noticeably quieter than evenings, and this will ease when the weekend is over.
- Leave the worst bottlenecks. Roguefeather Den, the Desolace centaur camps and the STV hunting quests come up most often. Do other quests in the zone first and come back later.
- Grind or run dungeons between quest hubs. Mob XP still adds up when the quest mobs are camped. Dungeon XP is still nerfed (our dungeon XP guide has the numbers), but a dungeon still gives you mobs nobody else can tag.
- The language setting. EU players found that the Preferred Online Language setting changes which layers you get. Picking French made things busier for some players, so if you switched to find a crowd during the empty phase, switch back to your own language. We haven't tested whether this does anything in other regions, and Blizzard hasn't said how the setting feeds into layering.
If you're wondering how layer changes worked before launch, including the zone-border swaps used to escape world PvP, our beta layering explainer covers that, and the developers talked about layering on the sixth Forever podcast.
What to watch
Watch for a Blizzard reply in any of these threads, or a line about layer population in the next hotfix notes. Class tuning is already due on Tuesday, November 10, and that would be an obvious time to adjust layers too. You can check how crowded things look on the Forever live streams page. We'll update this article when Blizzard says something.
